Graduate student receives multiple honors for research excellence


Jaclyn Merlo, MS, a second-year doctoral student in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Integrated Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program, has been granted a series of awards while working under the mentorship of Shivani B. Ruparel, PhD, associate professor and director of research in the Department of Endodontics. 

While operating in the research lab run by Ruparel, Merlo has been honored with the following awards: 


Marwaha inducted as ICD fellow


Last month in Orlando, Florida, Rochisha Singh Marwaha, DDS, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry and assistant director for the Dental Public Health (DPH) Residency Program, received the honor of being inducted as a fellow of the International College of Dentists (ICD). 


Distinguished dental educator Jon M. Dossett, DMD, named Texas Dentist of the Year


Jon M. Dossett, DMD, FACD, FICD, MAGD, ABGD, assistant professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry, was presented with the 2023 Texas Dentist of the Year award. 

Every year, the Texas Academy of General Dentistry (Texas AGD) selects one dentist to honor as the Texas Dentist of the Year, the highest honor a Texas dentist can receive. This year, 14 nominees were chosen throughout the state from local societies and 10 active components of the Texas Dental Association and Texas AGD.

Fred Philips, DDS, assistant professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry, was installed as president of the San Antonio District Dental Society earlier this year. 


The first School of Dentistry Fall Festival and Halloween costume contest


The School of Dentistry hosted two inaugural events this October, the Fall Festival and the Halloween costume parade and contest. Both were a huge success, bringing together students, residents, faculty and staff, and kicking off the first quarter of the new academic year.

UT Health San Antonio dental student recipient of ICD-WUDAA Scholarship for a third year

For a third year, a School of Dentistry DDS student is named the recipient of the International College of Dentists (ICD) and Washington University Dental Alumni Association (WUDAA) Scholarship Award. The 2023 awardee for this highly competitive national scholarship is senior dental student Max Shaw.


The School of Dentistry Announces $100,000 in Funding from Delta Dental

 

The School of Dentistry recently received $100,000 in funding from the Delta Dental Community Care Foundation to increase access to community oral health care in 2023-2024. This funding made possible through the Access to Care Grants Program, will be used again this year to support patient care at UT Dentistry’s Ricardo Salinas Pediatric Dental Clinic and Laredo Dental Clinic. 


Dental Student Receives Pulp Biology and Regeneration Award at IADR

 

The International Association for Dental Research (IADR), a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing dental, oral and craniofacial research worldwide, recently granted two Pulp Biology and Regeneration Group student travel awards. These awards are the culmination of a committee review process that judged the candidate abstracts based on rigor, originality and overall impact.
