Giving back: Alumnus Dr. Ray Scott facilitates generous gift to the School of Dentistry
Ray Scott, DDS, UT Health San Antonio Class of 1983 alumnus, recently presented a generous gift of nearly $110,000 to the School of Dentistry on behalf of the American Dental Partners Foundation Inc., for which he is the president. The foundation was originally established for the sole purpose of supporting dental students in their dental education.
38th Annual James P. Hollers Memorial Lecture
In December, the School of Dentistry hosted the 38th annual James P. Hollers Memorial Lecture. This program honors James P. Hollers, a dentist and longtime San Antonio civic leader who chaired the San Antonio Medical Foundation for 20 years. He was the driving force in not only establishing the School of Dentistry but the foundation of the UT Health San Antonio. His determination and leadership provided guidance necessary for the state legislature to allocate funds to establish the institution.
Delta Dental supports care of the underserved
The School of Dentistry’s Department of Developmental Dentistry has been awarded a generous grant of $50,000 by Delta Dental’s Community Care Foundation to support patient care activities of the Ricardo Salinas Pediatric Dental Clinic and UT Health Laredo Dental Clinic. The Ricardo Salinas Pediatric Dental Clinic is a distinctive collaboration between the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, Children’s Shelter of San Antonio, Texas Cavaliers, and the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry’s Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry Program.
Rebekah Sculley completes leadership excellence program
Rebekah Sculley, RDH, MS, assistant professor/clinical in the Department of Periodontics, Division of Dental Hygiene, graduated from the Leadership Excellence for Academic Professionals (LEAP) program on November 11. Dental hygiene seniors receive jackets in unofficial ceremony
Late last month, seniors of the Dental Hygiene Program were coated during an unofficial Welcome to the Profession ceremony conducted during their ethics course. To the sound of soft music played on a student’s phone, Jo Ann Jordan, MA, RDH, director of the Dental Hygiene Program, called up each senior one by one to receive their School of Dentistry embroidered coat and a copy of the Dental Hygiene Oath. 2021 Faculty Promotions
The School of Dentistry wishes to congratulate Ravikumar Anthony, BDS, MS, MDS, and Rebekah Sculley, RDH, MS, for their successful applications for promotion. Their promotions were approved by the UT System Board of Regents to be effective September 1, 2021. Dr. Anthony, appointed in the Department of Developmental Dentistry, has been awarded promotion to Associate Professor/Clinical. School of Dentistry offers hand skills course to international dentists
This July the School of Dentistry began offering a new continuing education hand skills course to international dentists seeking future admission to an International Dentist Education Program. The four-day, 32 hour workshop is designed to assist international dentists prepare for the bench assessment required when applying for admission into advanced standing programs. Giving Back to Help Others Succeed
Dr. Uzoukwu and Dr. Miller, class of 2021, returned after graduation to share their time and knowledge as instructors in the annual Learning Enhancement for Achievement in Dentistry (LEAD) program which prepares incoming first-year and rising dental students for the year ahead by conducting an intensive three-week summer boot camp. 2021 Faculty Research & Master Clinician Awards
Two distinguished faculty members received their award plaques, recognizing them as awardees of the 2021 School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Master Clinician Awards. The School of Dentistry first announced the award winners in April as the awardees were speakers during the 39th Annual Research and Clinical Symposium. Faculty Research Award Anibal Diogenes, DDS, MS, PhD, was selected for the 2021 Faculty Research Award for his long-running standard of research excellence.

Class of 2021 dental students, hygienists achieve 100% licensing pass rate
The School of Dentistry celebrated its Class of 2021 as 100% of all dental and dental hygiene seniors passed the Western Regional Examining Board (WREB) this April. Traditionally, the WREB, a high-stakes licensure exam, requires the students to demonstrate clinical competency with live patients. However, at the onset of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, Texas dental schools advocated for simulated exams.

Dental Student featured in “Real Jobs” video series
Joi Walls, a rising fourth-year dental student, was recently featured by InTheKnow.com for the series titled “Real Jobs” that profiles young adults aspiring to enter various careers. The five-minute video follows Joi through her day caring for patients and creating content for her YouTube channel.
