Master of Science in Imaging Sciences Class of 2027 pinning ceremony represents major professional milestone

 

For Master of Science in Imaging Sciences student Mia Zamora, RT(R)(ARRT), choosing a career in advanced medical imaging is a way to help patients seeking answers through what can be a stressful experience. 

“I’m there to make their anxiety less and their experience better,” said Zamora, who recognized the impact medical imaging technologists and their work have on patients when a close family member was diagnosed with and treated for cancer.

Coated with purpose: MLS students step into next chapter of their academic journey

 

The energy was electric as the Medical Laboratory Sciences Class of 2027 gathered at the Holly Auditorium on Sept. 19 for its White Coat Ceremony, a time-honored tradition symbolizing the official transition from student to medical professional-in-training.

With flowers in hand, proud family members and friends gathered in eager anticipation as their loved ones prepared to take part in the ceremony.

Student spotlight: Occupational therapy student wins American Occupational Therapy Foundation scholarship

Second-year Doctor of Occupational Therapy student Vivian Nguyen has received the Charles Christiansen and Beth Jones Endowed Scholarship from the American Occupational Therapy Foundation (AOTF). 

Nguyen’s accomplishment is especially noteworthy because she demonstrates thoughtful understanding of what it means to be a service-oriented, evidence-based practitioner even though she is early in her occupational therapy education, said Department of Occupational Therapy Assistant Professor Kathryn Crane, PhD, OTR.

Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders founding chair retires, new chair steps into role

When Fang-Ling Lu, PhD, CCC-SLP, FASAHP, learned in 2017 that the School of Health Professions was seeking a leader to build a graduate-level speech-language pathology program, she saw an opportunity to create a medically focused program that would significantly increase the number of highly trained speech-language pathologists in the region.

Doctor of Physical Therapy Class of 2026 posts 100% first-time pass rate on national licensing exam

 

The 50 graduates of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Class of 2026 posted a 100% first-time pass rate on the National Physical Therapy Examination.

Very few programs post 100% first-time pass rates, said Department of Physical Therapy Chair and Associate Professor Bradley Tragord, PT, DPT, DSc.

Physician Assistant Studies Class of 2028 celebrates white coat ceremony

 

Physician Assistant Studies student Kimberley Murillo didn’t hesitate when asked to describe what receiving her white coat means to her.

MLS professor appointed chair-elect of Institutional Faculty Advisory Body

Assistant Professor Cordy Kudika, MA, CHS (ACHI), director of clinical education in the Division of Medical Laboratory Sciences, is chair-elect of the new UT San Antonio Institutional Faculty Advisory Body.

Kudika will begin her two-year term as chair-elect on Sept. 1. She will transition to chair for the second year of her term, which ends Aug. 31, 2028. She said she looks forward to serving the university and supporting its mission and vision.

School of Health Professions Dean David Shelledy, PhD, RRT, RPFT, FAARC, FASAHP, will receive the Legacy of Excellence Award this October from the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions (ASAHP). 


Respiratory Care faculty member named CHEST fellow

 

Assistant Professor Megan Carreon, MHA, RRT, FCCP, has been named a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST).

Carreon, who serves as interim chair of the Department of Respiratory Care, will formally be inducted in October during CHEST’s annual meeting. She is the third member of the current Department of Respiratory Care faculty to receive the honor, which recognizes leaders in pulmonary and critical care, sleep medicine and respiratory care.

Podcast: SAFD medical director describes innovative EMS programs that reduce ER trips and help patients

David A. Miramontes, MD, FACEP, FAEMS NREMT-P, medical director for the San Antonio Fire Department and an associate professor in the Department of Emergency Health Sciences, is featured in a recent podcast episode with EMTS Academy.

In the episode, Miramontes details how multiple EMS programs in the San Antonio area are building connections with patients, solving problems and reducing unnecessary ambulance trips to the emergency room.

PT professor presents research poster on exercise and virtual reality games at World Parkinson Congress

 

Department of Physical Therapy Assistant Professor Anjali Sivaramakrishnan, PT, PhD, presented a poster at the World Parkinson Congress on a pilot study she led that examined the effect of exercise paired with virtual reality-based games on balance and cognition in people with Parkinson’s disease.

Medical Laboratory Sciences students learn about specialized lab role that supports organ transplantation

 

Six Medical Laboratory Sciences master's students attended a program designed to deepen their understanding of a specialized area of the medical laboratory profession responsible for the genetic and immune system testing that enables organ transplantation.

The American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) held its annual educational workshop in Austin, Texas, in June. MLS students from the region were invited to participate in the workshop’s Laboratory Professionals Day program on June 6.

With proud family members and friends watching, members of the Doctor of Occupational Therapy Class of 2027 received their white coats on May 7 in a traditional ceremony that marked the transition from the classroom to the fieldwork and the capstone experiences of their third and final year in the program.

Master of Science in Imaging Sciences students win awards at state conference

Students in the Master of Science in Imaging Sciences (MSIS) Class of 2027 participated in the Texas Society of Radiologic Technologists (TxSRT) Annual Meeting and Educational Symposium held in Austin in April. 

TxSRT is the professional organization for medical imaging professionals, radiation therapists and imaging advocates across Texas. 


PT professor receives national award for professional service and leadership

 

Associate Professor Michael Geelhoed, DPT, OCT, MTC, has been selected to receive the Lucy Blair Service Award from the American Physical Therapy Association.

The award recognizes physical therapists and physical therapy assistants who have added exceptional value through their service to APTA and its state-level organizations.

The annual award recognizes faculty for all-around excellence and exceptional contributions in teaching, research and service.
