For a third year, a School of Dentistry DDS student is named the recipient of the International College of Dentists (ICD) and Washington University Dental Alumni Association (WUDAA) Scholarship Award. The 2023 awardee for this highly competitive national scholarship is senior dental student Max Shaw.

Max has spent his academic career with the goal of giving back to his community and the people around him through becoming a general dentist. Max grew up in the panhandle of Texas and attended West Texas A&M (WTAMU) in Canyon, Texas where he double majored in Biochemistry and Biology. During his time at WTAMU, he conducted research in the field of biochemistry that led to the publishing of three articles.

In 2020, Max joined the School of Dentistry at UT Health San Antonio where he has shown his commitment to community outreach through volunteering at the San Antonio Refugee Health Clinic (SAHRC), serving elementary school children during sealant days and training at a community health clinic for children in low-income households. Max also serves as the representative for the School of Dentistry on the Student Alumni Counsel and Campus Internationalization Committee.

“This is a remarkable achievement! For the past three years, our school has had an ICD scholarship recipient selected from the national candidate pool. I work closely with Max, and he fully deserves this award,” said Moshtagh Farokhi, DDS, MPH, clinical associate professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry and faculty advisor and mentor to Shaw.

Congratulations to Max from everyone at the School of Dentistry!

The ICD-WUDAA Scholarship Program was established to support dental students with their tuition and to raise awareness of the serious issue of dental school student debt.
