Shelbourn receives the 2022 AAPF Mark Setter Leadership in Periodontology and Dental Implantology Award

The recipient of the Dr. Mark K. Setter Leadership in Periodontology and Dental Implantology Award must exemplify leadership in the profession by their actions in promoting periodontology and dental implantology. This is not a clinical award but an award for leadership and promoting all aspects of what it means to be a periodontist.

“Julia Shelbourn earned this amazing recognition through her dedication, hard work and outstanding leadership in the last two years. She has served the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation as the resident liaison for periodontics in the last two years in our program. She is a role model for what “leading by example” means, and I am honored to be able to work with her every day,” commented Angela Palaiologou-Gallis, DDS, MS, professor and director, Postdoctoral Periodontics Program.

Julia A. Shelbourn, DMD, third-year resident, attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, School of Dental Medicine and joined UT Health San Antonio’s School of Dentistry Postdoctoral Periodontics Program immediately after graduation. She will move to South Carolina to practice once she completes her residency in San Antonio.

“I am grateful each and every day to get to be a part of the UT Health San Antonio Graduate Periodontics Program and am so honored to receive this award while being recognized on a national level. I hope to continue to make UT Health San Antonio proud,” said Dr. Shelbourn.

The Dr. Mark K. Setter Leadership in Periodontology and Dental Implantology Award was established by Susan Setter, Drs. Jason Souyias, Jason Stoner and Mitch Godat with the AAP Foundation in honor of periodontology great, Mark K. Setter, DDS, MS. Setter was well-loved, and contributed to the field in many ways through his practice, lectures, and mentoring of many dentists, periodontists, and students. This annual $10,000 award recognizes a periodontal resident who exemplifies the leadership qualities that Setter lived and encouraged throughout his lifetime.
