Moshtagh Farokhi, DDS, MPH

For more than three decades, the Presidential Excellence Awards have recognized individuals whose contributions elevate UT San Antonio’s academic and clinical environment. This year’s honorees continue that tradition, exemplifying the mission, values and exceptional talent found throughout the university.

Among the 2026 recipients is Moshtagh Farokhi, DDS, MPH, professor/clinical in the department of predoctoral dental education in the School of Dentistry, who received the Teaching Excellence – Sustained Award. This distinction honors faculty whose longterm dedication to teaching has profoundly shaped the learning environment and advanced the academic success of students across the institution.

Farokhi reflected on the honor, saying, “Receiving this award is a reminder that my professional journey has been shaped by the collective support of the School of Dentistry's Deans, Associate Deans, and colleagues, including Dana English, EdD, MS, RDH, and Bennett Amaechi, BDS, MSc, PhD, MFDS RCPS (Glasg), FADI. The School of Dentistry has offered me valuable opportunities to serve both the profession and the public, especially the dental students who represent the next generation of patient-centered practitioners. Through teaching and mentorship, I strive to inspire future dental professionals with the values of compassion, excellence and lifelong learning. Above all, I hold a special place in my heart for the students I teach and the patients we care for.”

Farokhi’s career reflects an unwavering commitment to educational excellence, mentorship and service. A faculty member at UT San Antonio since 2016, she has served as both an associate professor/clinical and, now, a professor/clinical in the department of comprehensive dentistry. Her academic journey includes a Doctor of Dental Surgery and General Practice Residency from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, a Master of Public Health from the University of Glasgow and a Certificate in Dental Public Health from the UT San Antonio School of Dentistry.

Throughout her career, Farokhi has been deeply engaged in student development and professional leadership. She has served as a longtime mentor and faculty advisor for the Student National Dental Association and the Global Health Student Association, as well as an academic advisor for the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Academic Dental Careers Fellowship Program. Her influence extends nationally and internationally through her roles with the Academy of Dentistry International, the International Interprofessional Case Competition and the Journal of Dental Education editorial board.

Her commitment to community health is equally distinguished. Since 2011, she has served as Dental Director of the San Antonio Refugee Health Clinic, helping ensure access to compassionate, highquality care for some of the region’s most vulnerable populations. She also contributes her expertise to the Texas Smile Foundation and the San Antonio District Dental Society, among many other service and leadership roles.

Farokhi’s numerous fellowships, including with the Pierre Fauchard Academy, International College of Dentists, American College of Dentists and Academy of Dentistry International, reflect the respect she has earned across the profession. Her recognition as a Shine Academy Member and her Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry further underscore her dedication to lifelong learning and educational innovation.

“This award honors our School of Dentistry's dedication to education, research, patient care, and community service. It motivates me to inspire learners, advance research, and serve our community, all of which are core values that shape our institution,” Farokhi shared.

Dr. Farokhi will be honored alongside fellow 2026 Presidential Excellence Award recipients at a celebratory dinner in April.
