Meet the Faculty: Dr. Andrea Bordoy

Since 2018, Andrea Bordoy, DDS, has acquainted herself rather well with the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry as she completed both an observership and an internship within the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Effective September 1, 2020, Dr. Bordoy steps into a new role and joins the department’s faculty as an assistant professor. Dr. Bordoy grew up in Venezuela’s capital city of Caracas and earned her dental degree in 2009 at Santa María University. She immediately began working as an oral and maxillofacial surgical assistant and had no doubt that she wanted to pursue the specialty. She went on to complete an internship for the specialization at Hospital Dr. Domingo Luciani and then moved to Bogota, Colombia to complete her oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the National University of Colombia. “For me, it is very impressive how we can change the quality of life of a patient with a surgical procedure,” Dr. Bordoy expresses. “I love the ability to be involved in patient care at the hospital, doing major procedures under general anesthesia like orthognathic surgery, TMJ, trauma; and in the clinic with minor procedures like dental implants, third molar extractions, among others under IV sedation or local anesthesia.” Dr. Bordoy places great value on dental education and its ability to develop confidence and growth in her students. Her favorite aspect of teaching is witnessing her students improve each day as they master complex procedures that originally intimidated them. As she embarks on this new chapter of her career, Dr. Bordoy feels that serving the institution as a faculty member marks the beginning of an incredible opportunity for her development. “The UT Health San Antonio is a recognized institution with some of the best dental and residency programs in the United States and around the world,” she says. “I have always wanted to be on faculty to teach dental students and oral and maxillofacial surgery residents, so being a part of this organization is a dream come true for me.” When she is not in the operating room, Dr. Bordoy and her husband can be found enjoying the outdoors. She enjoys running, hiking, and time at the gym.
